Recently, there has been a lot of controversy about heating methods and the amount of savings in this regard. The main statement that we will touch on and label as a myth or truth is that infrared heating is the most expensive way of heating in Slovenia. Although infrared heating is a relatively young heating system, there is already a lot of information available, backed by the experience of specialists in the field of infrared heating and more than 10,000 existing users, who completely reject this claim.
Why is infrared heating in most cases the cheapest, but can also be the most expensive?
We note that there are frequent problems with younger providers of infrared heating systems who do not have enough experience in this field. It can happen that due to successful sales or sparing knowledge about the operation of infraredheat, customers are inadequately advised and consequently sell heating which brings higher costs instead of savings.
In the world of infrared heating, there are some laws that make – if we take them into account – this the cheapest way of heating.
The first rule is that we should not equate convective heating with radiant heating, as it involves a different heat transfer to the room. Compared to central systems, the radiation is free of piping and losses in the system itself.
Subject to legality, infrared heating is mostly one of the cheapest systems, especially when comparing total costs over a long period (20, 30 years), i.e. with the considered investment, consumption, service and maintenance, which is not the case with a quality infrared heating system.
A heating system with infrared heating panels can be even more expensive than heating oil or other heating systems if the laws are not followed. Infrared heating has some specifics that can significantly change the performance characteristics and power consumption. If the infrared heating panels have too little power, if they are incorrectly positioned in the room, made of poor quality materials and with inaccurate regulation, consumption will be high and the quality of space heating will be poor or disturbing. As a result, there are very conflicting opinions in the public. Before buying, consultations with experts in the field of infrared heating and knowledge of the laws of radiant heat are neccessary.
Adequate power of panels
One of the main factors that brings savings is the adequate strength of the panels in the room. It often happens that providers advise customers to reduce the power of panels in the room due to successful sales or ignorance, and the result is the constant operation of panels at the upper limit of productivity and thus high consumption. The solution for this is, of course, the appropriate strength of the panels according to the size of the room, insulation, the presence of glass surfaces, the number of external walls…
Appropriate regulation
The next reason is proper regulation. Very few thermostats or regulators on the market are intended exclusively for infrared heating. Ordinary thermostats are usually made for several types of heating, which does not allow the optimal supply of energy needed to heat the room. Classic thermostats operate on the hysteresis principle, which means that the infraredpanel connected to the thermostat operates at full power (100%) or is switched off. This method of heating is not the most comfortable, as the temperature in the room fluctuates, and even more so the feeling of warmth.For maximum efficiency, it is therefore necessary to install an IR Sun WiFi regulator, which does not work on the principle of hysteresis, but constantly monitors the temperature in the room and detects the response of the building to the heat supply to the room. It calculates how much heat needs to be brought in very accurately and at all times to maintain the desired heat and maximize savings.
Panel positioning
It is important that the panels are installed correctly in the room, which can only be arranged by professionals. Therefore, before installation it is good to have knowledge or an expert who will place your infraredpanels in the space as needed. It is best that the infraredpanels are installed on the ceiling, as then efficiency and even heat distribution is best. However, if this is not possible, they can be mounted on the wall, but in optimal places. Unfortunately, without knowing where to place the infraredpanels in the room, we can significantly increase consumption and reduce heating efficiency - such as directing them towards window surfaces, etc.

Infrared heating system: heat pump
An air-to-water heat pump is an inverted cooler system. In cold periods and in poorly insulated buildings, radiator heating mode or when the compressor is weak (on average after 8 to 10 years of operation the compressor starts to weaken) it needs the help of an ordinary heater, which can be a monthly payment in the amount of annual consumption.
The main difference is also in the investment. The investment in infrared heating panels in new buildings is at least 2 to 3 times lower when comparing a quality heat pump and quality infrared heating panels. However, we must not forget that there are no maintenance costs for infraredpanels, as they do not consist of moving parts that would be depreciated over the years.
If we touch directly on the method of heating, the difference is that the walls and objects are, with infraredpanels, warmer for at least 2-3 degrees celsius – that is, approximately at the temperature of the air in the room, which gives a greater feeling of warmth.
